What should I look for when searching for a plastic surgeon?
The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) is the only Board, which approves board certification. The American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) is recognized by the ABMS. You should see a plastic surgeon who is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
Most board certified plastic surgeons are members of either or both the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). Membership in those societies is not mandatory.
Usually credentials are prominently displayed in offices and especially on web sites. Patients should not have to search for very long if at all to determine the board certification or any qualifications of their doctor.
AAAASF is a national organization that accredits offices and operation room facilities. Your surgery should be performed in an accredited facility. You should also ask for the credentials of the anesthesia provider who will be performing your anesthesia.
You should also try to get a personal recommendation and be sure the plastic surgeon performs the procedure in which you are interested frequently.
